Abstrakt: This study attempts to describe the spatial organisation of Mesolithic sites in the central parts of the county of Värmland in western Sweden. The analysis is based upon some 300 non-excavated, and therefore undated, sites. Three sites are studied more thoroughly. Different types of raw material occurring at these sites are important variables. One important issue is to what extent non-local raw material (mainly flint) has been used and what this can tell us about patterns of contact and movement. Dateable artefacts (from both Mesolithic and Neolithic periods) from 34 of the sites are included in the analysis. The study shows that the Mesolithic sites are probably more numerous than the Neolithic ones, and that they appear all over the area of investigation. Neolithic sites are fewer in number and are mostly found in the southwest part of the area. There also seems to be a correlation between the number of different raw materials and dated sites. The use of many different raw materials during the Mesolithic is obvious. Non-local raw material is found at about 40 % of the sites and the majority of sites with only that type of material appear in the southwest parts of the area. The use of flint all over the investigation area during all times suggests a pattern of contact/movement from the southwest or west. The study also discusses the importance of lakes, rivers and creeks as means of movement, orientation and organisation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
