A literary criticism is presented which discusses a line from the C Text of the book "Piers Plowman," by William Langland. Langland compares bishops to a proverb describing wolfs defecating wool. The author notes varying interpretations of the line by translators Derek Pearsall and Carl Schmidt as to whether it indicates the wolf fouling the wool of the sheep or the wolf defecating wool itself after eating the sheep. The objection of scholar George Kane to the second interpretation is noted. |
