Abstrakt: The article discusses the etymology of the word "chough," a word identifying a species of bird. The author notes how Proto-Indo-European words have formed the basis for words identifying animals and animal noises in multiple languages. The influence of onomatopoetic words representing animal noises on animal names is noted. The author comments on whether Norman and Anglo-Norman French words may have influenced the formation of Middle English forms of "chough" and suggests that "chough" can be traced back to the Germanic words "Ká" and "káwa."
