In this article the author discusses representations of the African goddess Mami Wata, a female water spirit, or mermaid, venerated in west, central and southern Africa and in the Caribbean diaspora. Central to the article is the author's examination of the exhibit "Mami Wata: Arts for Water Spirits in Africa and its Diasporas," presented at the U.S. National Museum of African Art, Washington D.C. A number of items on display are examined including painting by Kwame Akoto, "Santa Marta la Dominadora," a picture by Hochi Asiatico, and "La Siren," by Nancy Josephson. |
