This article studies cooperative and clashing interests in small groups. The two groups that are described here, were arranged to meet for seven periods of an hour and a half over two days, to study their own development as groups. Group A had nine members, Group B eight members, and each had the services of one of the senior authors as consultant. The groups met next door to one another in an educational retreat building at the University of Wisconsin. After the seven meetings, each group had two additional meetings for an hour and a half each to review its own history with the other senior author as consultant. Many opening comments centered around who knew what these groups were about, and several references were made to the brochure. Several members spoke of their hope for contact and made tentative forays for connection in the group. At the same time, others seemed determined to stay silent, separate, and distant. There was anxiety about these differences and the feeling expressed that the personal worth of members with one approach might be greater than those with another. |
