The review examines and analyzes the data of the literature and our own results of studying microglia, which fulfils important functions in the normal and pathological brain. The hypotheses of origin of microglia, new data about its maturation, differentiation, and importance in brain ontogeny are presented. The data on localization of microglial cells, their transformation from one form into another, and their role in pathological processes, as well as the relationships between microglia and other brain cells, mediated by a variety of factors are considered.
