Abstrakt: A method for the α-adrenergic sensitivity assessment by the results of the conjunctival instillation of 0.5% clophelin (clonidine) in healthy subjects is proposed. The method permits detecting different clonidine influence in healthy subjects by measuring the local mydriatic reaction in the eye after drug instillation and by the evoked systemic effects (e.g., extent of miosis in the contralateral eye, reduction in the systolic blood pressure, and decrease in heart rate). In healthy subjects, these differences and the extent of response depend on the initial condition of the autonomous nervous system. Stimulation by the α2-adrenergic agonists activates both branches of this system. In subjects with predominant sympathicotonia, the systemic responses to clophelin increase, while in subjects with predominant vagotonia, the peripheral responses intensify. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
