Abstrakt: Evaluation apprehension, caused by observation during the course of training, is identified as an important source of anxiety in beginning counselors. Evidence establishing a link between being observed and evaluation apprehension is found in an extensive recent literature on the social facilitation/inhibition of behavior. The social facilitation paradigm is suggested as a useful model for predicting positive and negative effects of supervision observation on the performance of counselors. Some recent studies that have attempted to test this paradigm in actual counseling studies are describe and some suggestions for future research are offered.
This article strives to frame counselor anxiety within a theory so that given certain training/supervision practices, trainee behavior might be both predicted and better understood. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
