The article presents an examination into the social conditions of the Balinese Chinese population in the city of Quanzhou, China. Details are given briefly reviewing the history of the group and their immigration from Bali, Indonesia in the early 1960s. Extensive discussion is then provided illustrating the cultural practices and position of the "guiqiao" group in Fujian province. Subjects addressed include their relations with the local populations, their speaking Balinese, and their use of Indonesian cookery. Conclusions are offered regarding the dynamics of social acculturation and identity in China. |
