This paper presents and discusses an approach that aims at addressing the socio-technical gap in systems development by integrating principles of Grounded Theory within an action research approach. The paper discusses some of these ideas within the context of the development approach adopted within an ongoing project, which aims at the development of a knowledge management framework and system for knowledge intensive SMEs in Europe. Principles of Grounded Theory were integrated in an action research framework in two phases of the development life cycle: i) qualitative case studies on collaborative work practices at SMEs, leading to the definition of requirements, and ii) the evaluation of project results. We discuss challenges and issues faced within real life constraints of projects with a tightly defined life-cycle, milestones and deliverables. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
