Stomach-specific mucoadhesive microspheres as a controlled drug delivery system have been developed to increase gastric retention time of the dosage forms. It is known that differences in gastric physiology, such as gastric pH and motility, exhibit both intra- as well as inter-subject variability demonstrating significant impact on gastric retention time and drug delivery behavior. This article presents the polymers use for mucoadhesive microsphere, factor affecting the mucoadhesion, and preparation techniques of mucoadhesive microsphere. Developments in the techniques for in vitro and in vivo evaluation of mucoadhesive microspheres have also been discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
