Abstrakt: The article discusses and examines the evolution of the concept of madness expressed by the Greek verbal and nominal group βακχεύω and the noun λύσσα in ancient and classical Greek history. The nominal and verbal derivatives of the noun λύσσα refers to a violent and wild state resulting from either a divine intervention or from a pathological madness caused by a dog's bite. The author suggests that the verbal group of βακχεύω indicates that the frenzy caused by Bacchos's mysteries or in the delirium instilled by the mythological God of wine Dionysus is manifest. A comparison of terms regarding pathological madness and divine madness in the classical period is provided.
