The article focuses on theatrical plays that participated in a trend in the early modern period in which the body is evacuated of the spirit. In "The Maiden's Tragedy," the Tyrant while lamenting the Lady's death disinters her and demonstrates a lack of concern for the Lady's spirit. In "The Revenger's Tragedy," Giovanus after avenging the Lady's honour celebrates the Lady's body as a new queen. In "The Duchess of Malfi," the Duchess prior to her execution, was more apprehensive about her body and shows little worry for her soul. |
