The article discusses the value of handicrafts in the period of emerging digital media. It describes the status of crafts subjects in institutions, with ceramics discipline experiencing disclosures over 2008. Analyzed is the value in craftsmanship through Pierre Bourdieu's "Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgment of Taste" and David Pye's "The Nature of Workmanship." It notes the connection of workmanship of certainty to industrial production. Craftspeople are said to be using technologies to mimic hand-work and explore aesthetic possibilities. |
