Abstrakt: Surveys the ethnic composition of regional and local Communist Party committees in Uzbekistan, a Soviet republic in Soviet Central Asia. Findings are compared to data obtained in 1970 and show that there is an increasing control of the local Party apparatus by native Muslims. Yet Moscow is successful in keeping Russians (non-Muslims) in many leading positions. It is concluded that further reductions in Russian control are inevitable.
