Abstrakt: The 1961 television documentary 'The Real West,' while claiming to divest its subject of romanticism and mythology, nevertheless was permeated with nostalgia that blurred the story's complexity. Ken Burns and Stephen Ives's 1996 series, 'The West,' moved beyond its predecessor in complexity, authenticity, and depth. The significance of such productions as 'The West' is their ability to inspire their nonacademic viewers to become inquisitive about the past in ways they had never before considered.
