The article deals with the common mistakes committed by accounting firms in the recruitment of accounting students. College recruiting has become more competitive because of shrinking accounting graduating classes and increased pressure on firms to hire only the best. Some of the common recruiting mistakes which could fail firms' efforts have been discussed. The first one is picking a nationally known school where competition is fierce. Instead, look for schools with an emerging reputation for excellence. The second is conducting interviews only. Firms that get to know faculties and establish a presence on campus will have better success. The third mistake is giving the wrong presentation. Students are interested in firm size and achievements, but don't forget to tell them about what their jobs will entail. The fourth one is failing to understand the firm's image on campus. Firms should emphasize the positive and try to address misperceptions. The fifth mistake is sending poorly trained or uninterested recruiters. Firms should consider the advantages of sending a line accounting manager instead of human resources personnel. The final mistake is failure to follow up as promised with a desirable prospective employee. INSET: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY. |
