This article discusses certain aspects of the information storage and retrieval technology. The technological innovation offers several reference books and software applications on a single compact disc while doing field work. The storage capacity of the discs is the same with that used for stereo systems but the data are formatted to be read by a personal computer. In order to use a compact disc-read only memory (CD-ROM) with a personal computer, the user needs a CD-ROM drive or a player. The database is indexed for easy access to the desired information from a variety of viewpoints and sources. |
