Abstrakt: This article discusses the accomplishments of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) regarding their lobbying efforts in the legislative and administrative arenas in fiscal 1988. Before 1972, the AICPA Washington office was not prepared to cope with the increased government interest in the accounting profession and the profession's interest in Washington. When it became obvious that improvements were necessary, the Institute initiated a new direction in the nation's capital. By 1973, the Washington office staff had expanded from 1 to about 25 individuals, who staffed the many new Institute committees covering various segments of the government's executive and legislative branches. Today, the Washington staff numbers about 40. Over these 16 years, the Institute has grappled with a roster of issues and programs that have had a profound effect on the accounting profession. In Washington, key contacts are essential. So, the Institute, working with the state certified public accountants (CPA) societies, initiated the key person program, which identifies CPAs who have close working relationships with members of Congress.
