Abstrakt: The article presents a discussion of parallel computing as of October 2009. It focuses on the opportunities for computer science researchers to re-engineer some fundamental aspects of information technology architecture, due to computer hardware manufacturing limitations. The inability of single-core microprocessors to provide faster clock rates has caused parallel computing to become a necessity, in the form of multicore microprocessor chips. Research being conducted at the University of California, Berkeley's Par Lab is described. It focuses on developing applications such as content-based image retrieval and intraoperative risk assessment for stroke victims.
