Abstrakt: | The article discusses the use of soldiers to manage crowds in France from 1890 to 1914. Soldiers were usually deployed in provinces in the country to avoid or stop violent confrontations between protesters and public forces. According to Jean-Marc Berlièere, there is a difference between modernization of protest policing in Paris and use of traditional methods of controlling protests. It is noted that some demonstrations still resulted to fights between demonstrators and public forces despite the presence of soldiers tasked to control crowds. |
