The article discusses the diagnosis and classification of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its pathogenesis in older people. It explores the role of the geriatrician in managing this chronic condition. CKD is stated to be asymptomatic and biochemical, for which tests are necessary to identify impaired renal function. It is informed that the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is accepted as the best measure of kidney function and that the introduction of estimated GFR has improved its detection. |
