The article presents information regarding the history of images in ethnographic research and education. Particular attention is paid to ethnographic images from the period between 1869 and 1920, because of the institutional developments of the museums and universities that housed the images. It is noted that this time period also featured technological advancements that better enabled the recording, storing, and dissemination of ethnographic drawings, photographs, and prints. Further comments are made concerning the founding of the German ethnological periodical Zeitschrift für Ethnologie (ZfE), and a discussion is included on the work of German ethnographers Otto Finsch, Theodor Koch-Grünberg, and Karl von den Steinen. |
