The article focuses on a study about White preservice teachers' interactions with and reactions to multicultural education course content, particularly with regards to issues of race. It examines the interactions between members of a college classroom community consisting of 26 White women students and their instructor, a man of color, in a graduate multicultural education course. The study believed that preservice teachers negotiate multiple identities in their movement between different communities and contexts. Findings of the study suggest resistance when the author explored moments in which students engaged in the process of ideological renegotiation. He also discusses the implications for the preparation of teachers to work with students of diverse backgrounds. |
