Abstrakt: | The article discusses Gothic literature written by U.S. author Herman Melville. Melville's education and weaving of maritime experiences into Gothic fiction are considered. A comparison is made between the short stories "The Death Craft" and "Benito Cereno" noting the religious aspects and metaphorical similarities of the narratives. The article concludes with a brief survey of anonymous prose pieces attributed to Melville. Other topics include the influence of Melville's social circle of friends and ships in literature. |
