The article discusses how dentists in Minnesota use and treat pit and fissure sealants as dental material. Pit and fissure sealants as caries-preventive agents were introduced in the early 1970s but the application of such technique by dentists has been slow. A survey was conducted among dentists in Minnesota who are members of the American Dental Association (ADA). Results showed that there is a strong belief among dentists that sealants do not last long in the mouth and that an occlusal amalgam is a better treatment than a sealant. In addition, of the surveyed dentists, 43.2% reported they had never used sealant while 18.5% said they had used it in the past but did not use it anymore. |
