The article presents a discussion on the situation of cleft lip and palate in children. Abnormalities in the said area effects speech, as speech is dependent on the oro-nasal-pharyngeal area. When a cleft is present, the deformed anatomy of the area results in the impairment of the functioning of the Eustachian tube, whose normal valving action allows fluids to drain out of the middle ear into the nasopharynx. When a baby is born with a complete cleft of the primary and secondary palates, the maxilla is divided into two parts and poses several challenges to a plastic surgeon in corrective measures. |
