The article explores the biography of sailor David "Cowboy" Weiss and the wreck of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior. Weiss' childhood and training in commercial ship piloting as a cadet at the Great Lakes Maritime Academy is discussed. The article describes the winter storm conditions, abrupt sinking of the ship, and loss of all crewmembers.
