The article presents the views of several dentists on managed care in dentistry. One dentist says that many individuals are accepting some form of managed care or preferred-provider plan for their medical needs, but they are reluctant when it comes to dental care. He says that nearly 50% of the people in the U.S. avoid regularly visiting the dentist. He says that benefits packages offered by U.S. companies include very few options for fee-for-service medical care as well as dental care. He says that in the same way as insurance companies, managed dental care companies are in business to make money, and are motivated by profit. Another dentist talks about the dental benefits that are increasingly being directed to dental Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs). |
