The article presents information on an increase in third party coverage for dental care in the U.S. It is reported that in 1977, 54.7 million Americans were covered by some form of prepaid plan, and by December 1982, the number had increased to 99 million. It is stated that insurance companies are in business for profit, and a dental insurance program is designed to make money for the company, and not to provide coverage for the patients' dental needs. The company and the insured enter into a contractual agreement, in which benefits are paid on the basis of the usual, customary, and reasonable (UCR) fee method. It is mentioned that in organized insurance management, a dentist plays an important role of providing accurate and complete diagnostic information. |
