The article describes a technique for the maxillary arch expansion in cleft lip and palate in infants, with either unilaterally or bilaterally collapsed cleft of the lip and palate, prior to primary autogenous alveolar bone graft surgery. It states that in cases of unilateral collapse, orthopedic molding of the greater segment prior to primary autogenous alveolar cleft graft surgery stabilizes the asymmetric maxillary arch. It mentions that the greater segment as well as the premaxillary segment pose an increased potential for developing a bilateral dental crossbite in the permanent dentition. It describes how a hydrocolloid impression is made of the infant's maxillary arch for the construction of an intraoral expansion obturator, and a stone model is produced from this impression. |
