Abstrakt: In order to investigate the properties of the field enhancement factor and emission current from a nanotube array, the local electric fields on an exact tip boundary of a carbon nanotube have been calculated. The field enhancement factor of a nanotube in free space is well described by the relation 0.7×l/r, where l and r mean the length and radius of the nanotube. It has been shown that the optimum normalized spacing s/l (as referred to the length) of a square array of nanotubes to get to the maximum current density shifts toward lower values when the length of the nanotubes increases for a fixed diameter. The optimum spacing for the maximum emission current is inversely proportional to the applied electric field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
