The retroalveolar notch (pterygomaxillary or hamular notch) is one of the most important structures in the maxillary arch relative to complete denture construction because of the posterior palatal seal passing through it. There are no anatomic studies of the notch in the dental literature that describe the variations present in its structure. In this study the retroalveolar notch was dissected in 30 human cadavers. Three main variations in notch morphology are classified and described. Histologic sections of these variations are also described. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
