Cleaning the Cage: Mexico City's Preparations for the Olympic Games.

Abstrakt: This article discusses the changes made to Mexico City, Mexico in preparation for the 1968 Olympic games. The efforts of the organizing committee to increase the enthusiasm of the Mexican people for the games are described. The concerns of Mexican elites regarding the proper balance between accommodations for foreign tourists and the preservation of Mexican folk culture are considered. The author believes that the presentation of a modernized and cosmopolitan experience at the Olympics was undermined by the poverty and political repression that occurred in Mexico City.
