A study was conducted on the histopathological changes that occur in the midgut of Spodoptera litura larvae on ingestion of Bacillus thuringiensis delta endotoxin. The first symptom was the degradation of peritrophic membrane within half an hour of ingestion of B. thuringiensis spores. After three hours of B. thuringiensis intoxication, the epithelial cells started swelling and after six hours of B. thuringiensis ingestion, hypertrophy was much more pronounced. During a 12-24 hour period after B. thuringiensis intoxication, many of the columnar and goblet cells became elongated and corroded and the inter-cellular spaces widened to a great extent. After 36 hours of infection, destruction of the midgut was almost complete, with most of the columnar and goblet cells becoming vacuolated, elongated and hypertrophied, and the nuclear material having dispersed completely.
