Abstrakt: The article presents an examination of the relationship between HIV and the mouth. The authors discuss the role that oral secretions play in the diagnosis, transmission and inhibition of HIV. They examine and analyze previous research on this relationship in an effort to summarize data on these issues. They note that a rigorous study on infectious HIV in saliva has yet to be produced. Their findings indicate that it is uncommon to find infectious HIV in the oral cavity, although HIV sequences are likely present in high frequencies, that saliva may contain anti-HIV activity and that oral secretions are a reliable source for monitoring anti-HIV antibodies.
