Abstrakt: This article discusses a number of issues concerning indigenist multiculturalism and the rhetoric of education as they relate to three moments of racialized social conflict in 20th-century Peruvian history. It aims to show that contrary to a logic, the indigenous voices in the three cases at hand were muted by the very efforts that purported to make them heard, and that in each instance, the rhetoric of education contributed to that silencing. It concludes with reflections on the 20th anniversary of the Uchuraccay murders, focusing on points of continuity and change with regard to the challenges of fostering national dialogue across distinct sectors of Peruvian society.
