Interviews and a survey were conducted to assess both the structure and content of mentoring and advising provided to early-career faculty in geography. Results indicated three broad conditions for structuring effective mentoring: 1) regular, proactive meetings; 2) engaging diverse groups of individuals within and outside of a department; and 3) leadership, resources, and philosophical support for professional development from departments and institutions. Within mentoring relationships, early career faculty would like a broader range of professional and career issues addressed. Although drawn from one discipline, the data suggest ways of improving mentoring practice in other fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
