The article discusses the Norton Anthology of English Literature (NAEL), arguably the most widely-used anthology of English literature. According to the author, three key factors led to the NAEL's rise. The use of Bible paper allowed publishers to include more content while keeping its weight less than its rival anthologies. The author notes that executives at W.W. Norton & Company were also crucial in the NAEL's development, keeping the company together during difficult times. He also credits editor M.H. Abrams for crafting an anthology containing content that appealed to faculty and was helpful to students. |
