The article focuses on Chinese poet and literary critic Yuan Mei and his advocacy for women's writing. Attitudes about women had begun to change among the members of society by the age of Yuan Mei. Possibly because his wife Madame Wang does not possess literary talent, Yuan Mei does not seem to have had a close marriage with her, but one poem reveals that they did not lack feelings for each other. One of the most moving parallel prose documents that he has created is his inscription on the tomb tablet of Fang Congniang. Meanwhile, the love and respect that he displayed toward the women in his household did not extend to all women and his hedonistic philosophy encouraged him to find satisfaction of his sexual desires. |
