The article reviews a study by K. A. Bishen et al. published in a 2008 issue of the "Journal of Oral Pathology and Medicine" which centers on basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and oral submucous fibrosis (OSF). The reduced expression of the cellular FGF established OSF was attributed to bFGF being released from differentiated cells into extracellular matrix (ECM). The increase in bFGF in early OSF was attributed to an initial injury phase due to areca congestion. |
