The article reviews a study by A. Lalli et al. published in a 2008 issue of the "Journal of Oral Pathology and Medicine" which highlights the pathogenesis of oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) and its predisposition to malignancy. The authors of the study found an increased suprabasal expression of cytokeratin (CK)1/CK10 which is a feature of hyperkeratotic lesions. An increased CK6 expression and a decreased expression of CK19 and CK17 were also found by the authors in the basal layer of OSF epithelium. |
