Abstrakt: The orbital line-up at a ribonucleic acid (RNA)/Au interface was investigated using photoemission spectroscopy. The particular interface, polyuridine (polyrU) homopolymer/Au, was prepared by injecting polyrU in aqueous solution into vacuum through an electrospray deposition system. This enabled buildup of the interface in multiple growth steps with intermediate characterization by x-ray and ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy measurements. The results suggest significant polarization effects in the RNA layer close to the interface as indicated by observed final state screening shifts in the photoemission spectra. The polarization at the interface causes a reduction in the electron and hole charge injection barriers, easing charge transfer between Au and polyrU. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
