This article reports on William Mariner, a 15-year-old English boy who survived the massacre of the crew of an English privateer the Port au Prince by Tonga Islanders and was adopted as a son of one of their most powerful chiefs. It mentions that Mariner quickly mastered the Tongan language and played an important role in an attempt of that chief to become the ruler of all Tonga. It notes that he escaped back to England in 1810 and co-authored a book regarding his experiences which became a trusted source of information about the history, language, and culture of Tonga. |
