The authors relate how they devised the play "Quality," a dark comedy about two shoe saleswomen. The playwright explains that the play started with a photograph of an elderly woman having extremely expensive shoes strapped on by a young woman. A workshop with Janet Sonenberg was held where they read through a scene of "Quality," finding metaphors and physical sensations. The director, meanwhile, felt the performance space needed to be extraordinarily evocative, and she wanted to reinforce awareness of the central argument of the play, which pits commerce against artistic quality. |
