The article discusses the approach to devising actor training programs in central Canada. At Humber College in Toronto, Ontario, conservatory students experience voice and movement training as integrated services, with devising techniques metabolized into their classroom work and creative projects from the first term of study. Meanwhile, the creative approach modeled by Odin Teatret, and later Primus Theatre, stresses the actor's agency in the initial creation of performance material. The curriculum of York University's Creative Ensemble program locates its sources outside the tradition of physical theatre, and students experiment with a range of approaches to site-specific and devised performance. |
