Abstrakt: The article focuses on the launch of the Advanced Light Source (ALS) project initiated by chemist David Shirley at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California. This project is a material science accelerator used to produce synchrotron light source for material experiments in the said laboratory. It also discusses the ALS funding issues, as well as the criticism from several material scientists. Challenges encountered by the project is also presented.
