Abstrakt: Solid blasting in production faces during drivage of in-seam galleries in Bord and Pillar method contributes about 60% of underground coal production in India. Improvement in performance of solid blasting is necessary for optimum utilisation of men and machines at the face. Considering successful application of air decking in opencast mining and tunnelling, it is expected to improve performance of solid blasting in underground coalmines also. This paper presents results of studies conducted with selected Indian permitted explosives for exploring the possibility of using air decking in solid blasting. Based on the results, it can be concluded that with proper selection of explosive and air decking length, any apprehension of misfire, deflagration and adverse effect on toxic fume quality due to use of air decking can be eliminated, and thus air decking can be tried for improving blast performance in solid blasting in underground coal mines.
