This article discusses the connections between Christian societies in Europe and the Muslim immigrant societies that live amongst them. The hope for a multicultural Europe where Islam and Christianity coexist is juxtaposed with the possibility that the social marginalisation of Islam will lead to the development of fundamentalism and possibly terrorist cells. The internal diversity of Muslim immigrants is described. The difficulty of identifying leadership within a community that immigrated for a variety of reasons is considered in terms of its possible reinforcement of Muslim alienation. The emergence of a Muslim youth movement that seeks to adapt Islam to accommodate European tolerance is assessed. |
