This article traces the development of OMEP over the last sixty years and analyses how the organisation has implemented the aims laid down by its Founding Members of advancing the interests and overall well-being of children throughout the world. OMEP has promoted the Rights of the Child, particularly those relating to articles 28-31 of the Convention in two main ways. First by joining with UNESCO and other NGO's to lobby governments and heads of state to ratify the Convention on the Rights of the Child and second, at a more fundamental level, becoming involved in training and research programmes to improve the quality and quantity of early childhood education and care throughout the world. In the last few years emphasis has been placed the needs of children aged from 0 to 3 years, as this is an area where in many countries the Rights of the Child are not being met.
